Vatican Leader Condemns U.S. Expansion of Federal Death Penalty Methods

Pope Leo XIV has condemned the United States government’s decision to expand the list of methods for executing federal death sentences, calling for immediate cancellation of these actions.

In a statement released on April 24, Pope Leo XIV emphasized: “The right to life is the very foundation of all other human rights. For this reason, society will flourish and succeed only when it protects the sanctity of human life.”

The Pope also noted that an effective prison system must ensure public safety while preserving the possibility of redemption for individuals convicted of serious crimes.
